What am i doing here at midnight? What else but post a hunger-pang recipe, quick fix with leftovers when you are really hungry at the middle of the night. What’s left over today? Idlis! And all we southies know that the evolved form of a cold dry left-over idli can only be an upma.. so here it is a quick recipe from my leftover kitchen… Idli upma!

Idli Upma Recipe


Leftover idlis – 4 numbers

Chillies – 2 of green or red or one of each

Oil – 2 to 3 tsps

Mustard seeds – 1/4 tsp

Chenna Dal – 1 tbsp

Salt – half a pinch


Add the oil to a kadai, pop the mustards.

Slit chillies and add them to the kadai.

Fry the chenna dal until they turn brown.

Crumble the idlis into pieces and add a tiny bit of salt, mix well and serve hot!

You can add curd to the upma and make it curd idli upma, its yummy especially when you had used red chillies!
