Plantain and me? weird comby! I ve never had one bite of this veggie until lately when i had to prepare it for my fam and wow! was it awesome? sometimes i do surprise myself! No i still dont like Vazhakkai the way its usually done in many south indian functions… but this one i tried in the microwave and fried like potatoes and came out yummmmy, surprisingly! So yea..here we go… vazhakkai (plantain / raw banana) fry recipe presented proudly to you from swar’s magical microwave kitchen!!
Vazhakkai (Raw Banana / Plantain) Fry
Ingredients
Vazhakkai (Raw Banana / Plaintain) – 1 or 2 – cut into very small cubes
Turmeric powder – 1/2 tbsp
Red chilly powder – 1/2 tbsp
Asafoetida – 1 small pinch
Mustard seeds – 1/2 tsp
Curry leaves – a few
Oil – 3 to 4 tbsp
Salt to taste
Method
In a microwave safe bowl, place the cut vazhakkai and mix in the powders, asafoetida and salt with some oil.
Microwave for a minute and mix well.
Add more oil when needed and keep microwaving for one-minute durations for 10 minutes.
Keep checking and stirring the plantain.
Remove when it looks cooked but not smashed.
In a kadai, add little oil, spluter the mustards and fry the curry leaves.
Add the vazhakkai and fry for few minutes.
Serve with rice and sambhar!
This is a healthier way to eat fried veggies since very less oil is used when done in microwave.
Try this out even if u hate raw banana like me…and trust me, u will love it!
